Consumer Alert: System Mechanic Professional 7

I recently purchased System Mechanic 7 Professional because I had some slowing of my machine and my Anti-Virus subscription ran out so I thought I would give it a shot. I made the mistake of purchasing the program without using the 30 day trial, and it turned out to be a big mistake. System Mechanic Professional is made up of 3 basic components, first there are the system tools, second an antivirus, and third a firewall. I will discuss the three basic components.

First the system tools are a set of utilities that help fix and optimize your PC. Many of the tools work very well, and do make a significant difference in PC performance. Purchasing the standard version includes all of these tools. I have had a little trouble with the disk defragmenter utility because it freezes halfway through the process. But with that exception it has worked well.

The Antivirus is the worst I have used. It hogs system resources and is very slow and tedious. The worst component is the email scanner. When it would start it would run for hours using %90 of the processor resources and when running would not allow us to send and receive email. I have since uninstalled the Iolo antivirus and loaded AVG Free and all of my problems disappeared. In fact the AVG antivirus found 2 viruses that iolo missed.

The firewall is very effective at blocking all traffic on the internet. It requires manual configuration for any interactive web sites, so for a blogger and techie like me it would have taken hours to get it set up so all of my web applications would run correctly. It was just to impractical to use.

If you need system tools to tune up your PC the standard version is capable and I reluctantly say may be worth the $39, however the Professional version that includes the antivirus and firewall should be avoided at all costs. Even with the system tools you should take advantage of the 30 free trial to make sure it works well for your system. Iolo will not issue refunds after the purchase for any reason, But that’s to be understood. I would have a hard time standing behind the product too.

  • Thank you for taking the trouble to publish this review. I found it most helpful. Last year I purchased System Mech.6., and used it just once cos it wiped out all the cookies. Now ZoneLabs are pushing v.7 and I'm a litle hesitant. I already use AVG for virus & Zonelabs for firewall, so would not want Iolo's 'Professional' toolkit. I think I will give the 30 day's free trial a go.

  • I agree with Mr. Yardley that SM7-pro has to be avoided! Being an Iolo Customer from 2002 till now, I've never seen such lousy product from them (or anybody else!)in the past. Having upgraded on december 21th I got nothing than trouble with it. But now, from downloading upgrade (ver. 7.05) last week all I get is "invalid license information" messages. This so called 'trusted' company does not answer my e-mails other than with an automatic reply to a link to http://www.iolo.com/customercare.
Which brings me no solution what-so-ever. Stay away from this software is my strong advise!

  • I too am experiencing the same exact problem. I was a big iolo fan when I first purchased system mechanic 5pro. System 7 pro is a horrible product and I refuse to pay for a product that simply does not work. I have left 4 messages for thier "supervisor" and have not received a return call yet! I tried to find solutions to their problem and their online support center is also useless. I will not spend anymore money on their products.

  • System Mechanic has introduced features that are impractical and frustrating to operate. I thought after the disappointment SM6 was, things would improve. I'd stick to SM5 until something better comes along. I only wish they continued making updates for it *sigh*

  • I also concur with everyone. I purchased SM7-pro and during a drive scrub a firewall update window popped up and the entire system froze. I was as unable to use SM7-pro it froze on the startup screen, then it would not start at all. I wrote to IOLO, they have not responded. I uninstalled SM7-pro, tried to install SM6-pro and guess what? I got an unable to install because Norton Anti-Virus and Norton Firewall were running or installed on my system, never had them. Looks like IOLO is using Symantec products. In addition, when trying to install SM7-pro, my user and serial key has become invalid. Stay away from this product no matter what the hype is you read.

  • I too have been a long time user and am amazed at how bad they have screwed up a product. I have been trying to call them for 2 days and the 877 number is busy, tech support is a joke, I spent hours with them last month all for nothing. I'm going back to Vcom, I don't like that there is not any free phone support but what good is free support if you can't solve the problem or the product just plain STINKS!!!!!!!!

  • I am in my 4th day of testing version 7 and am getting ready to uninstall. Everything about it is a joke. Version 6 had several problems but was far better than this one. Customer support is totally unresponsive.

  • Thanks to everyone for the comments. I have reviewed many other sites and have seen similar comments, so I will not be upgrading to System Mechanic 7. System Mechanic 6 works pretty well for me, however.

  • I completely agree with everyone on this board. I made the same mistake of upgrading to 7.0 Professional. The software simply STINKS. It blocked all me incoming and outgoing emails even after I disabled the email protection and firewall. This software should be immediately pulled and IOLO should do the right thing and refund our MONEY! Thier software is more harmful than what it is intended to guard against. SPREAD THE WORD, SAY NO TO IOLO!

  • I must apologize to a few posters. When I was rejecting a duplicate post in moderation, I mistakenly deleted three other legitimate and quality posts. There sentiments are similar to my article in that they have experienced similar issues and they to suggest that no one waste there money buying this product.

  • I too have used SM for many years and versions. Ver 6 was bad, Ver 7 was to be better. I can't say as I have 25 - 30 hours trying to install. The other day I got 96% the way there - vast improvement. I thought I had finally cracked it! No cigar. Tech support?
You got to be kidding!!! Class action law suit anybody? Tech support manned by robots. Website help is pathetic!
Man they should pull this pig off the market! Dilbert?? Hello??

  • I just purchased System Mechanic Professional 7, thankfully I only paid $29.95 thanks to a "special offer" that came with my new video card. I have Vista Ultimate and I can not install the program. It freezes when checking for updates during the install. I've tried to contact Iolo but have not had any luck. I can install SMP 6 with no problem. I've been searching for a solution and can't find one. This problem isn't limited to Vista only; I've seen a couple of XP sp2 users who have had the same problem. If anybody has had this problem or have a solution please let me know!

  • After having reinstalled Windows XP several times on my computer, I purchased System Mechanic Professional 7 for its Firewall and AntiVirus. For some unknown reason, for the first five restarts following the installation, I had to "install" the AntiVirus and Firewall for a second, third, etc. time. Whenever I go to use a utility, a message pops up that claims the program cannot connect to "www.iolo.com," even though there is no security on the program's connection and I am successfully online. "Drive Medic" also appears to hate people, as it gets through one hard drive per restart, and freezes at predictable intervals. SM Pro 7 does offer many resources and does a lot for a little price, but there are too many quirks in the programs for me to be satisfied. I'm sticking with the program only because I don't trust my three hard drives, and save everything between reinstallations of Windows to my USB stick. I got the Blue Screen of Death yesterday, so everything gets reinstalled...but for those who have valuable files on their computers, this program is not for you. Its jobs that freeze halfway through offer only an impending error for any machine.

  • As many above used previous versions, like Kapersky FW/anti virus in those version, and that was the reasons i purchased a license for v7 pro. They now have taken the former FW/Avirus out, and replaced them with their own.Total mahem, garbage! Don't buy it, and if you have, don't use it! Will have to take my laptop in, and have this crap removed, likely for a charge of double the cost. Stay away, and spread the word.

  • I spoke to an Iolo tech today and he said that System Mechanic 7 does NOT work with a 64-bit OS. I asked if there was anything planned and he said that he didn't have that information but added he didn't know of any changes in the near future.

By Anonymous Anonymous, At February 27, 2007 9:40 PM

  • I JUST got the 64bit version of Windows Vista and am very disappointed that I blew the extra $40 - $50 upgrading to System Mechanic 7 Professional. It ran great on 32bit but is evidently not compatible with 64bit. Any recommendations now? Iolo WAS great, now they just kinda suck.

  • I'm glad that there is a place to complain. I bought 7 Pro, but don't use firewal or AV. But the System Mechanic is bad enough. It locks up and the only way to get rid of it is to reboot. What a waste of money.

  • Purchased SystemMechanic 7 from Frys for Free After Rebate after having moved to SystemMechanic 6 from Norton Systemworks Pro last year. I was happy with SystemMechanic 6, but figured for the $5 tax + rebate postage why not upgrade to something Better! Worst Choice. The Kaspersky AV software license has been limited to only 6 months from the prior period. The Kaspersky Anti Hacker that came with Version 6 has been replaced by Iolo's Firewall product that BLOCKS just about everything. I tried to reinstall the Version 6 & uninstall everything but AntiHacker--then install Version 7 without the VERY PROBLEMETIC IOLO PERSONAL FIREWALL only to find I get INVALID LICENSE when trying to install Version 7. I think it is because I have to uninstall totally Version 6, but who knows because Iolo DOES NOT ANSWER ANY CORRESPONDENCE. They only send you references to their Knowledge Base to try & get answers, else you click on their email & get a ticket assigned to their NON-EXISTANT tech support. I can only hope they honor their rebates. Judging from all the negative publicity that I am now discovering, perhaps they are going to take the rebates & run. Sounds like the product RAMBOOST of years back. BEST SUGGESTION IS TO TOTALLY AVOID UPGRADING TO SYSTEMWORKS 7 UNTIL IOLO OWNS UP AND ACKNOWLEDGES THIS PRODUCT PROBLEMS.

  • I received a comment regarding the use of System Mechanic 7 on a Windows Vista machine. They were very happy with the results. I deleted the comment due to the use of an expletive but felt it was important that his opinion be heard. This review was based on SM7 with XP, but it may work much better with Vista. I will gladly look into it when I upgrade to Vista.

  • I was an avid user of system mech products for the past few years, and decided, regrettably, to upgrade to system mech pro 7 - the antivirus software was stuck in an initiating mode and to this day I still have been unable to remove all the parts of the three components. I was able to run sys mech pro 7 one time, and one time only. My system is now unstable and this has caused serious windows issues. Even the restore point will not entirely work. I have been in communication with iolo but I too, get the standard "idiot" responses and knowledge base articles. I have been given case numbers but nothing else has happened in two months. I think a class action is in order

  • I actually liked System mechanic 7 on My Windows Media Center ed. It kept it running super fast. I was slightly buggy at times, but no big issues. I was dumb and upgraded to Vista and now Sys mech 7 def shows it does not work correctly. It hangs and locks up PC and CPU usage is at 100% while trying to defrag with it. I am running core2 duo 2.6g wih 4g ram.

  • I agree with ALL of the negative comments posted here. The Customer service is absolutely non-existant. I was not given the option of a trial version and made the big mistake. Lost $70 dollars and no longer have System Mechanic on my system. IOLO do not appear to care much about anything other than selling. Based on their approach to customer service on this one, they do not deserve to have ANY of their products recommended. Do your self a favor and look elsewhere for software and avoid a major headache. SM 7 Pro will not even tolerate existing on your computer with another virus scanner present. Do not try that one! FORGET iolo and SM 7 Pro.

  • How I wish I had found your comments on SM7 before I upgraded from SM6. While SM6 performed very well, SM7 appeared very unstable and I made the fatal error of making a rescue disc using SM7. The program then proceeded to reformat my hard drive from NTFS to FAT and the whole system was unusable! Hours on hold with what is laughingly called tech support and zero meaningful response from IOLO failed to resolve things. Thankfully DELL support were very helpful, even though the problem was not theres, and I was able to reset the machine to "as shipped condition". Steer clear of this awful product and judging by IOLOs lack of support, this company as a whole.

  • I agree to all here
    having had SM 4, 5, 6
    i love them,

the iolo firewall and antivirus dont work, spent more time trying to get them to work,

As far as SM you can even schedule when the system will clean or even review what it done.

I looking for a new system utility

I switched to Kapersky internet secrity package for firewall and virus. I like but big learning curve and pricy.

  • I wish I had found this website two days ago. I upgraded from SM 5 to SM 7 for $29.95. I can't install the product. It hangs after downloading on "Checking for updates." After being on hold with their Tech Suppport for 50 minutes I was told it had to be my internet connection and trying the install in safe mode with networking would solve it. It did not. Iolo does not even answer their sales telephone lines. They must be getting too many compalaints on them. I stull have hopes of getting my money back.

By Anonymous Anonymous, At April 26, 2007 8:15 PM

  • I agree with all the comments. Not only will the company NOT stand behind their product neither will Office Depot where I spent my hard earned money.

By Anonymous Anonymous, At April 27, 2007 9:59 AM

  • Same here, still waiting for decent patch. DONT INSTALL!!! Eventually it will seriously hose your system!!! (yes intially it might all seem nice, but believe me, it will hose)
